Microsuction is a safe and effective method for removing excessive earwax.
At The Outer Ear Nurse, all microsuction procedures are performed exclusively by Emma, a registered nurse who has completed an accredited microsuction ear wax removal accreditation, supported by extensive practical training.
Microsuction is a dry, precise technique that allows earwax to be removed under direct vision, reducing risk and improving comfort. When required, fine instruments may also be used to safely clear the ear canal.
This method is widely recognised as a preferred ear wax removal option by Ear, Nose and Throat specialists, particularly for people experiencing blocked ears or wax impaction. Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction involves no water, no mess, and no unnecessary pressure.
Emma’s calm, professional approach ensures you feel relaxed and confident throughout your appointment and you’ll leave with clearer ears and lasting comfort.

Before your appointment for our professional earwax removal services, please soften your earwax using olive oil for two nights.
Lie on your side and place 2–5 drops of olive oil into the ear. Remain in this position for 10–15 minutes to allow the oil to soak in and soften the wax.
If needed, a small piece of cotton wool with a little Vaseline can be placed at the ear opening to prevent leaking. Do not leave cotton wool in for longer than one hour.
Please DO NOT use any oil or ear drops if you have a perforated eardrum, grommets or any discharge from the ear canal. If you are unsure, feel free to contact us before your appointment.

Seeking professional earwax removal can help maintain ear health and improve overall well-being.
Microsuction earwax removal is available for children aged 12 years and over, provided they can remain still during the procedure. This approach is part of our professional earwax removal services, ensuring the treatment can be performed safely and comfortably.
Frequent water exposure can cause water to become trapped in the ear, which is especially common among surfers and swimmers. When combined with earplugs, ocean debris, and regular water activity, this can lead to an increase in wax build-up and discomfort. To address these issues, professional earwax removal services, such as microsuction earwax removal, can be highly effective. Routine ear checks can also help maintain clear, healthy ears and reduce ongoing problems.
You may be more prone to earwax build-up if you: Have narrow, curvy, or hairy ear canals; use cotton buds or other objects in your ears; wear earplugs, earbuds, or headphones; work in dusty or dirty environments; have a family history of wax build-up; or need your ears checked before a hearing test. To address these issues, consider seeking professional earwax removal services or microsuction earwax removal for a safe and effective solution.

Using cotton buds, candles, or objects to clean your ears at home can cause damage, infection, or push wax deeper. It’s always safest to see a qualified professional for ear cleaning, especially if you have sensitive ears or hearing aids.

Unlike syringing, it’s dry, comfortable, and suitable for almost everyone, including people with perforated eardrums or previous ear infections.

No. Microsuction is different from ear syringing. Microsuction is a dry, controlled procedure that uses gentle suction under direct vision to remove ear wax. Ear syringing uses water pressure, which can be messy and carries a higher risk of discomfort or complications. Microsuction allows for greater precision and is considered a safer option for many people.
